A lot of people still hear horror stories about losing money on the wrong retirement villas or visas. It can be confusing because there is so much to handle when planning your retirement in Bali.

JEAN MARC — FOUNDER, BALI VILLA REALTY

“Most people don’t fail at retiring in Bali because of the island — they fail because they choose the wrong villa, in the wrong area, without the right person guiding them.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do you need to retire comfortably in Bali?

A single retiree may need around USD 1,500–2,500 per month, while a couple may spend USD 2,500–4,000+, depending on accommodation, healthcare, dining, transport, and lifestyle. Keep in mind that living costs are separate from visa requirements.

Foreigners aged 60 or above may be eligible for the E33F retirement visa/KITAS. Typical requirements include a valid passport, proof of around USD 3,000 in monthly income or pension, bank statements, accommodation, health insurance, and other supporting documents. Requirements can change, so check with Indonesian Immigration or a licensed immigration specialist before applying.

Common challenges include healthcare access, traffic and infrastructure, visa compliance, housing contracts, cultural adjustment, tropical weather and financial planning. It’s worth spending an extended period in Bali before relocating permanently so you can experience daily life and compare different areas firsthand.

Foreigners generally cannot own land under Hak Milik (freehold) like Indonesian citizens. Depending on eligibility and the property, alternatives may include Hak Pakai, leasehold, or certain structures through a foreign-owned company (PT PMA).

Possibly. If you stay in Indonesia for more than 183 days in a year or show that you plan to live there, you may become an Indonesian tax resident. This could mean you need to report both Indonesian and overseas income, depending on the rules and tax treaties.
